Loughborough Pubs

This page lists all (or will eventually, if I can be bothered to keep updating it) of the pubs in Loughborough, and a brief comment about each. It is primarily intended for my own personal use, but if anyone wishes to use it then feel free, but don't blame me if you don't like it.

Thanks to Stuart Carter for his update to my original list. This has now been incorporated here.

I suppose I ought to point out that I have no financial interest in any of the pubs mentioned. (except for the money I regularly invest over the bar - for details of the return on my investments see Phil's Beer Belly). Although having said that, if any landlord (or anyone else for that matter) wants to buy me a pint or several, I am open to bribery. Seriously though, if your favourite pub is missing, let me know and I'll add it (probably).

Swan In The Rushes

The Rushes (yes that's the name of the street - links The High Street and Derby Road), near the traffic lights, opposite Quick Fit.

Local CAMRA pub. Excellent choice of beer, including bottled beers from around the world. Folk club upstairs every other Sunday. Other types of live music at various times.

I am told that the manager who has been there for some time has recently left. So lets hope the new people won't want to fix what ain't broke.

Three Nuns

Location

I'm terrible with street names, but I think it is Sparrow Hill. Anyway it's near the church.

Update: It is actually on Church Gate not Sparrow Hill, although it's not on the pedestrianised bit of Church Gate, you have to go up past all the shops, cross over the road and go past the Left Legged Pineapple. Funnily enough it is right by the Church.

Brewery

Alternative / Students

Usually has a good guest beer.

Also known affectionately as The Six Tits, but was originally The Three Tuns, I believe.

Often have Live Rock Bands.

The Garton

Location

I can't remember the name of the street, but it's on the part of the one way system with the chicane and the pelican crossing. You know, near the posh chinese restaurant, which is upstairs.

It used to be The Tap and Spile, but has since been refurbished (again) and is now The Garton.

I am told it has been refurbished yet again, and is getting worse every time. I think it is still called The Garton, but I believe it has been bought by Bass Breweries

Does anyone (apart from Martin & Rory) remember when it was The White Horse?

Excellent choice of beers.

Blacksmiths Arms

Location

Guess what? I can't remember the street name again! It's just round the corner from the The Garton on the bit of the one-way system going the other way. You know, near the traffic lights.

I haven't been in here for ages, but they used to serve Theakston's Old Peculiar and XB.

Pretty average sort of place, but is a must on Friday nights for the folk club upstairs. The beer is a bit variable, but usually OK.

My favourite pub, probably. Beer is excellent. Always has a good guest beer.

Update: This pub can be quite difficult to find. Especially if you don't know where it is.

The easiest way to get to the pub is using the canal (Warning don't try this if you are in your car, or are walking - you really need a boat). If you are in the car, the best way to get there is by driving. For this you need to stay on the roads. Although having said that the road that you have to drive down is called Canal Bank, and that is exactly what it is, i.e. the old towpath. Watch out for the potholes in the road. This is especially important when you are driving home from the pub and there is a pissed twat in a wheelchair who is trying to cadge a lift by hanging onto your rear windscreen wiper. When this happens you will find that when the said nutter hits a particularly large pothole, he will suddenly dissappear from your rear view mirror, which you will find quite amusing, until you realise that your windscreen wipers may never work again.

Not bad for an estate pub.

Live music on Saturday nights.

Recently I have been going here sometimes on a Friday night with Martin, John, Glynn etc...

Flan O'Brien's

Location

On the corner opposite the main post office. Near the Ferrari garage.

All keg beer I'm afraid.

Live Irish Music Thursday & Sunday evenings.

The Custard Bar

Location

Apparently it is on Wards End.

I didn't even know this place existed. I think it is fairly new.

Cotes Mill

Location

This is actually out of town on the A60 (Nottingham Road)

Brewery

We used to go here regularly years ago when we worked for Polymer Laboratories. I remember many happy summer evenings by the stagnant mill pond ;-) Quite a few people lived out Nottingham way, so it was a useful place to stop off at on the way home. I've not been for ages, so I don't know what it is like nowadays.

Hobgoblin

Location

The Rushes, opposite The Mugal-E-Shahi Indian restaurant.

Brewery

Hobgoblin??

This used to be The Black Lion, and I haven't actually been since it has been Hobgoblin. The Black Lion used to be really good years ago, but they gradually started to go downhill. We had a few bad pints there, and didn't bother going back.

I enjoy Hobgoblin beer, so I must make the effort of going along sometime.
